Description:

A spectacular hand-embroidered banner of the highest quality, created to celebrate veterans of the Franco-Prussian War and World War I. The 58 x 48 in. (overall) banner, which originates from Odenheim-Baden, is heavily decorated on both sides. One side bears a large crest of Baden consisting of a crowned crest flanked by two griffins, with "Mitt Gott fur Volk und Vaterland". The corners bear the names of battles, namely: "Dijon", "Belfort", "Nuits", and "Strassburg", all scenes of battles during the Franco-Prussian War. The work on this side of the banner is outstanding, with deep, thick bullion throughout, rich gold wire trim, inset "jewels", and top-quality embroidery. The reverse of the banner is equally impressive. The banner's owner is embroidered in gold at top and bottom: "Military and Warrior Association Oldenheim". At center appears the embroidered figures of two men, one a veteran of the Franco-Prussian War, the "grandfather", the other a veteran of World War I, a soldier with rifle and helmet. Both men have been awarded the Iron Cross. Beneath their figures is embroidered the motto: "In treue fest" ("Steadfast in loyalty"). The years "70-71" and "14-18" are embroidered at top, and laurels appear throughout. Both sides of the banner bear large margins trimmed in gold, with gold bullion fringe on three sides. The hoist bears rings and snaps, two missing. While the reverse side of the banner bears a somewhat dark stain at bottom and some minor shredding of the white satin at the top margin, the obverse shows only a dime-sized repaired hole in the maroon satin background. A most impressive piece for display.
