Description:

WORLD WAR I BRITISH MILITARY PUBLICATIONS (7)
A collection of seven British military publications covering a variety of topics, all from World War I, two of which are named to British soldiers. The first is a ‘Soldier's Pay Book' issued to Lt. Corp. James Myers of the Royal Army Service Corps on Sep. 4, 1918. Accompanied by four documents related to Myers, including: a ‘Special Pass' granting temporary leave; ‘Certificate of Employment During the War'; ‘Soldier's Demobilization Account'; and a message to Myers informing him that money has been added to his account. All four documents are contained within the front pocket of the book. The second item in this lot is a ‘Field Message Book' belonging to a Staff Sergeant Lockley. The majority of the pages are left blank, with several at the front having been torn out. A few pages at the back bear lists with names of soldiers and new items received. In the back pocket are two photo postcards depicting a soldier, one in uniform and another on his wedding day. Also present is a military order sent to Lockley on August 4, 1918, in part: ‘...the party of 20 Drivers of whom you are in charge will proceed to the Kit Store...then draw a rifle and 20 rounds each at the Armoury...also draw an iron ration...to parade at the Orderly Room...proceed and in Full Marching Order...' With a second order from the same day assigning new men to his team. All documents are held within the back pocket. The remaining publications include: ‘Field Service Pocket Book', bearing several fold out diagrams; ‘Field Service Regulations: Part 1 Operations'; ‘Knowledge for War: Every Officer's Handbook for the Front'; ‘Notes for Infantry Officers on Trench Warfare'; and the ‘Manual of Map Reading and Field Sketching'. Sold with an American publication, a pamphlet released by the Gillette Safety Razor Company, titled ‘How to Recognize the Rank of Uncle Sam's Men Afloat and Ashore', contains numerous illustrations of rank insignia. Eight pieces total, overall very good.
