Description:

WORLD WAR I AERIAL FLARE/SMOKE BOMB
A rare World War I airplane-dropped aerial flare or smoke bomb. The 5" diameter red tin body is 45" long and now entirely hollow and inert. Four thin fins would have steadied the shell as it descended and a "spinner" in the nose would have armed the bomb. If used as a flare, a small parachute would have deployed before ignition to extend burn time. The body bears the Philadelphia maker's name: "EDW. G. BUDD MFG. CO. MARK I - FLARE" along with lot no. and inspector's initials. Two bands encircle the casing with prongs attached which were used to attach the flare/bomb to the aircraft's bomb release mechanism. Of course, any bombs surviving from this era are very rare. Ex: Bannerman's military surplus.
