Description:

WOODROW WILSON
(1856 - 1924) Twenty-eighth President of the United States who passed sweeping reform laws, gave women the right to vote, and led the United States through World War I setting the ground work for the League of Nations. S.P., 11" x 14" sepia, a depiction of the troop transport U.S.S. GEORGE WASHINGTON, which twice ferried Wilson to the Paris Peace Conference in 1918-1919, with inset circular images of Wilson and U.S. Navy captain EDWARD MCCAULEY, JR., the commander of the ship. Besides Wilson, who signs at the bottom center of the image, the photo is further signed by McCauley, as well as: CARY GRAYSON (1878-1938), Wilson''s aide and physician; JEAN JULES JUSSERAND (1855-1932), the French ambassador to the U.S.; and ALBERT GLEANER (1858-1937), vice-admiral commanding the Cruiser and Transport Force, who adds the date: "19 April 1919". Bears a repaired 1 1/2" vertical tear at the top edge, with slight creasing and chipping, else very good. At the time that Gleaner dates this photo, Wilson was in France to negotiate the terms of the Treaty of Versailles, which dictated the terms for the end of World War I and demanded what some viewed as needlessly strict reparations from Germany. The treaty is considered to be a contributing factor to the resurgence of militarism and the rise of the Nazi Party in Germany, culminating in the outbreak of World War II.
