Description:

WOODROW WILSON
(1856 - 1924) Twenty-eighth President of the United States who passed sweeping reform laws, gave women the right to vote, and led the United States through World War I setting the ground work for the League of Nations. Unusual partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. tall folio, Washington, Sept. 14, 1920. Less than a year after his stroke, Wilson signs a commutation of the sentence of one Oscar W. Heishley, who had been sentenced to nine months for stealing interstate freight. Boldly signed at lower right in bright purple indelible pencil, and co-signed by Attorney General A. MITCHELL PALMER. Wilson suffered a massive stroke on Oct. 2, 1919 which paralyzed his left side. He never fully recovered from this debilitating event and for the remainder of his presidency often used a pencil, which was easier to grip than a fountain pen. Folds, a few marginal splits and light toning, overall very good condition. Presidential pardons from the twentieth century are rare in any form, with Wilson pardons being especially scarce, particularly with a post-stroke signature.
