Description:

WOOD-SOLED LABOR CAMP SHOES TAKEN BY AN AMERICAN G.I.
A grim reminder of the Holocaust, a pair of unissued crudely-made wood-soled shoes with black leather uppers, typically intended for use by concentration and labor camp prisoners of the Nazis. The shoes, soles 11 in. long, are marked 'ZVH.4.' on the soles, along with the size 'HPD 49'. These shoes were taken/captured by Cpl. Michael Tersillo from New York. Sold with a color copy of Tersillo's March 29, 1945 bring-back papers mentioning the shoes which were removed by us from the very box Tersillo sent home from Europe. At the time he mailed his box of 'souvenirs' home, we know that Tersillo was active near the German city of Thiers which itself was immediately adjacent to Hinzert concentration camp. The Gestapo in Trier sent prisoners, including Jews, to Hinzert. where they were used as forced laborers for major projects in the area, such as the Autobahn from Koblenz to Trier.
