Description:

Commemorative walking stick known as a ‘Wolchowstock', 37 in. long., named for the Wolchow River region near St. Petersburg, Russia. These sticks were hand carved by German soldiers as well as their Slavic allies to honor the harsh fighting endured by the Germans on the Eastern Front, usually gifted to higher ranking officers. The stick offered here has been painted an attractive dark color and appears to have been made from a table leg, featuring a twisted design for most of its length with a four sided top piece and a rounded tip for easy grip, and a metal base. Carved into the top is the word ‘Wolchow', an eagle's claw, two crossed flags set above a tent and a pair of boots, and the Luftwaffe eagle flying above a mountainside, indicating this was given to a member of the Luftwaffe. Some cracks in the wood throughout, expected from age and use, else very good. It is said that these sticks were so highly cherished among the recipients that they were likely to part with their medals, equipment, or other personal items before these treasured relics. A great personal piece of history from one of the most brutal theaters of World War II.
