Description:

(1894 – 1977) American lieutenant general who commanded the 100th Infantry Division from mobilization until the end of the war. As part of the VI Corps, the division went into combat in the Vosges Mountains, then through the Rhineland, Ardennes, and Central European campaign. Fine association lot of three T.L.S.'s and one A.L.S. with nickname ""Pinkie"", most on Infantry Center, Fort Benning letterhead, 1948, all sent to to CLARENCE R. HUEBNER (1888-1972), American major general who commanded the 1st Infantry Division in its assault on Omaha Beach, in the drive across France, at the Hurtgen Forest and in the battle of Aachen. In small part: ""...Here at Benning we are going through the throes of a change in the command set-up. We are now under Third Army...One of our main deficiencies is a combat team the [Infantry] school can call its own...All the troops here are mixed up with outside commitments of a tactical nature...we are neglecting the simple and fundamental parts of making companies of soldiers...I am inclosing a copy of the informal report...on your foxhole suit. If they can't use it I Certainly can. It will come in good for turkey and duck shooting...I will always appreciate the opportunities you gave me in the European command..."" More content mentions mutual friends in the military, thanks for accommodations during a visit, etc. With carbon copies of Huebner's associated letters as well. File holes else fine.
