Description:

WINTHROP SARGENT
(1753-1820) Revolutionary War general, a founder of Marietta, Ohio, Secretary of the Northwest Territory and first Governor of the Mississippi Territory. Good political content A.L.S., 4pp. legal folio, Mississippi Terr., June 25, 1800, in part: '...our Friend the Secretary of State was elbowed out, we are informed...that the President has actually displaced him. I assure you I am truly grieved at the Information... Will you talk with our Friend Col. Pickering upon this Business and obtain for me his opinions?...' Sargent also goes into great detail concerning 'libelous' charges leveled against him, and vows that his detractor will suffer 'under the lash of the law'. Much more fine content! Very good. In May 1800, Timothy Pickering resigned following the XYZ Affair, and was replaced by John Marshall.
