Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. Fine association T.L.S. "Winston S. Churchill" on his 28 Hyde Park, London letterhead, 1p. large 8vo., London, June 29, 1950 to William H. McGaughey (1912-2004). McGaughey, who had met Churchill two years earlier to convince him to appear for a celebration of the manufacture of the one-millionth American car, would later serve as George Romney's vice president at American Motors. Between terms as prime minister, Churchill writes the industrialist: "...It is kind of you to write to me and to send me a copy of the article in TIME Magazine about Mr. C. E. Wilson's policy, which is interesting to me. It was a pleasure for me to meet you and your distinguished colleagues on the delegation from Detroit. Please give them and your wife my kind regards..." Lightly toned, a file hole in one corner, else very good. Charles Erwin Wilson Charles Erwin Wilson (1890-1961) was an businessman who served as Secretary of Defense President Dwight D. Eisenhower. He was previously the president and chief executive officer of General Motors. Also included is a letter to McGaughey from LEWIS W. DOUGLAS (1894-1974), American Ambassador to the United Kingdom, 1p. 4to., Paris, Oct. 4, 1948 mentioning having extended the 1948 invitation to Churchill, and another letter from PAUL G. HOFFMAN (1891-1974), the first administrator of the Economic Cooperation Administration, where he led the implementation of the Marshall Plan. Hoffman also mentions the invitation sent to Churchill and states that he was happy to assist. Three pieces.
