Description:

WINSTON CHURCHILL
(1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister who led England through the Blitz and orchestrated the British liberation of occupied Europe and Germany. Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. Important T.L.S. with holograph salutation and subscription, 1p. 4to. on his Chartwell letterhead, July 31, 1937 to Col. J. G. Bill of City & West End Properties Ltd., London. Churchill writes, in full: 'Dear Colonel Bill, I accept your offer to pay a rent of 420 [pounds] a year exclusive of all rates, for a term of five years, with an option to me to terminate any midsummer by giving six months' notice. Yours very faithfully, Winston S. Churchill'. Small, old paperclip stain and its offset at top, mailing folds, else fine. Very nicely double matted with a Karsh portrait of Churchill, the entirety set into an ornate silvered wood frame. In this letter, Churchill is discussing his rent of an apartment at 11 Morpeth Mansions, a property for which he had been paying twenty pounds less per month in previous years. This property served as Churchill's London base from 1930 or 1932 (accounts vary) through 1939 and comprised the top two floors at a red brick 1880s apartment block half a mile from Parliament. It was there on Sep. 2, 1939 that Churchill and other Members of Parliament met in his tiny study to pen a letter urging Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain to issue an ultimatum to Adolf Hitler. War was declared the following day.
