WINSTON CHURCHILL
(1874 - 1965) British Prime Minister who led England through the Blitz and orchestrated the British liberation of occupied Europe and Germany. Churchill is today considered perhaps the greatest statesman of this century. Manuscript L.S. "Winston S. Churchill", 2pp. 8vo. London, Oct. 12, 1903 to a "Mr. Newbolt". In part: "...It is with very great regret, and with no small feeling of guilt, that I have to inform you that my work this week has become so heavy, that it will be quite impossible for me to undertake the article you were good enough to ask me to write. Perhaps at a later date I might attempt it". Fine. Churchill was likely corresponding with Henry Newbolt, editor of the Monthly Review between 1900 and 1905 and to which the statesman regularly contributed.
