Description:

WINIFRED WAGNER
(1897 - 1980) Daughter of the composer Richard Wagner who also was of course much admired by Hitler. Hitler first met Winifred Wagner in 1923, when they grew very close. When Hitler was jailed for his part in the Beer Hall Putsch, Wagner sent him food parcels and stationery on which part of Hitler's political manifesto 'Mein Kampf' may have been written. Her relationship with Hitler grew so close that by 1933 there were rumors of impending marriage, though there were similar rumors about her love for English novelist Hugh Walpole. Haus Wahnfried - Wagner's home in Bayreuth - became Hitler's favorite retreat. When Hitler gained power, he ensured that Wagner was given a yearly allowance of 100,000 Reichsmarks. As for Winifred, her postwar devotion to the man she cryptically referred to as 'USA' - for 'Unser Seliger Adolf' ('our blessed Adolf') - remained undimmed. Good content T.L.S. on her personal letterhead, 1p. oblong 8vo., Bayreuth, Feb. 9, 1977 in German to a 'Herr Platte'. In part: '...I was very pleased that you felt the need to express your sympathy to me and I thank you very much for that. Enough negative things have been said about Hitler, mostly by people who didn't know him closely for 22 years, like me, and that's why I wanted to point out the positive sides of this phenomenon when Syberberg's tactless questions gave me an opportunity to do so offered . Warmly reciprocating your kind wishes...' In 1975, Hans-Jurgen Syberberg produced 'The Confessions of Winifred Wagner', a film in which Wagner opened up after 30 years about her relationship with Hitler, resulting in a torrent of criticism leveled at the 'old Nazi', as she called herself in the film.
