Description:

WINFIELD SCOTT HANCOCK
(1824 - 1886) Union major general severely wounded facing Pickett's charge at Gettysburg, also active at Antietam, Fredericksburg and Chancellorsville. Fine association A.L.S., 1p. 8vo., Baltimore, Oct. 18, 1865 to Gen. WILLIAM T. SHERMAN then serving in St. Louis. In part: '...General Henry Heth late of the Confederate Service and an old friend of mine from an association of many years in the same Regiment, is about proceeding to St. Louis on a business matter...concerning the most reliable business men...I trust you will listen to him and give him such courtesy as your cool judgement...of a warm heart may dictate...' Fine. HENRY HETH (1825-1899) served as a CSA major general commanding the Department of East Tennessee. He succeeded A.P. Hill at Chancellorsville, and commanded the division that precipitated the battle of Gettysburg where Hancock himself so distinguished himself. As a matter of fact Heth, a cousin of George Pickett, led troops in Pickett's Charge which Hancock's men so valiantly helped repulse.
