Description:

WILLIAM WORDSWORTH
(1770-1850) English poet and a collaborator with Coleridge in several works, a leading influence in the English Romantic era. Scarce content A.L.S. 3pp. 4to., [Grasmere, England], [n.d. but ca. 1799-1802], toMiss Douglas. An unusually revealing letter in which he mentions his childhood friend Mary Hutchinson, whom he married in 1802 and who bore him five children, and his friend and neighbor Robert Southey. In part: "...Miss Hutchinson has communicated me your conversation with her this morning; and if we have no letter from you mentioning a change in your plans I should then have come over to Sheswick as Miss H. purposed had not a preexisting engagement with the party which the Misses Southey have come hither on purpose to join, prevented me. If your Brother and you still think of remaining in this neighbourhood till Dorcaster Races, and if as you expressed to Miss H. you feel it would be a support and comfort to you to pass the intermediate nite under my roof, it would give me much pleasure to receive you; only I must add with regret that we can't accommodate you till after Sunday for want of room. I was glad to learn that neither you nor your Brother suffered from the great exertion of yesterday...". In a lengthy postscript, Wordsworth adds: "We have some hope that Mr. [Robert] Southey will be here on Saturday to hear the B[isho]p preach at Hawkstend next day; if you would take up your old quarters at Low Wood or Grasmere for a night or two it might be pleasant for you to come along with him". Some folds parting, otherwise in good condition. Wordsworth lived in Germany with his sister in 1789-1799 while at work on "The Prelude". Moving back to England, they settled in Dove Cottage at Grasmere in the Lake District, and this time with fellow poet Robert Southey nearby, who with Coleridge became one of the "Lake Poets".
