Description:

WILLIAM W. S. BLISS
(1815-1853) American military officer and aide-de-camp to Zachary Taylor during the Mexican War and later in Taylor's later presidency. Noted for his brilliance and effectiveness, an early death cut short his bright political future. Fine content war-date A.L.S. as Gen. Taylor's Chief of Staff, 1p., 4to., "Hd. Qr. Army of Occupation, Camp Near Matamoros," Apr. 8, 1846, a letter of instruction to Maj. John Munroe, who commanded Taylor's Fort Polk [Point Isabel] while Taylor and Bliss advanced further towards the Rio Grande and battle. In part: "In relation to the organization of the 2nd Mis[sissippi] men for purposes of defense, I am directed by the General to say that for all such purposes, they are under your directions and will be organized and dispersed as you may judge... The General expects that you will arrest any officer who may presume to interfere with your arrangements in this particular...It is hoped that the Monmouth has safely weathered the recent gales & will soon reinforce you by Capt. Porter's Company...". ." Chip broken off at lower right present and tacked on with archival tape, else very good. During this conflict the army was plagued by volunteer officers appointed through political favors who were frequently insubordinate, a fact derided by Winfield Scott throughout the campaign. Bliss, a gifted mathematician who spoke 13 languages, married Taylor's daughter and became the general's private secretary during his presidency; the couple were extremely popular and Bliss seemed destined for an executive post himself, but died of yellow fever at age 38 after contracting it in New Orleans. The Army named Fort Bliss in Texas in his honor in 1854. Written on heavy paper with creamy age toning.
