Description:

(WILLIAM W. MCKEAN) EAST GULF BLOCKADE DOCUMENT
War-date document, 1p. 16 x 12.5 in., [n.p., n.d.], titled ‘List of vessels[?] captured by the East Gulf Blockading Squadron, Flag Officer W.W. McKean (accounts yet unsettled)'. This document comes from the estate of WILLIAM W. MCKEAN (1800-1865), Union admiral, grandson of Declaration of Independence signer Thomas McKean. The list contains fourteen ships that were captured by the Gulf Blockade, including: Schooner Andromeda, Steamer Florida, Steamer Bermuda, Schooner Jane, Schooner J.G. McNeil, Schooner Florida, and more. At the end of nearly every line is the term ‘Appealed', reasons unknown. The bottom third of the document bears a legend explaining the letters that appear at the left of the entries, some marked as paid by mistake to Admiral Tanagent, appealed, no news, unknown delay, etc. Due to the ships on this list, it is believed this document was prepared late in the year 1863, possibly early 1864. A few small tears at the folds, else very good. Great research material.
