WILLIAM W. CORCORAN
(1798-1888) American banker, philanthropist, and art collector who is especially remembered for the Second Empire style art gallery he commissioned James Renwick to build in the 1850s on Pennsylvania Avenue in Washington, D.C. to house his significant art collection, the Corcoran Gallery. Uncommon A.L.S. 1p. 8vo., Washington, Apr. 23, 1886, to the wife of Rev. Thomas deWitt Talmadge, Susan Whittemore. In part: "...Many thanks...for thinking of me and sending the beautiful Easter souvenir. The verses look...natural...culled from the garden...". Finely penned in purple ink, near fine condition.
