Description:

WILLIAM T. SHERMAN
(1820 - 1891) Union major general declared by the press to be 'insane', he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah, and Columbia along the way. Good content manuscript D.S. as Secretary of War, 24pp. legal folio, Washington, Oct. 20, 1869. Sherman attests to the validity of the signature of Quartmaster Gen. MONTGOMERY C. MEIGS (1816-1892), Union brevet major general and quartermaster general whose responsibilities included overseeing railroad, ship, and wagon transportation for the army. Meigs provides an extract of a report by Col. W. W. Wright, Chief Engineer of Military Railroads, on the reconstruction of the Nashville & Chattanooga Railroad, heavily damaged by both Union and Confederate forces during the war. A very detailed description of the extensive repairs is made, citing 115 miles of track rebuilt, plus 15 additional miles due to damage caused by raids by Wheeler and Hood's invasion. The cover sheet, signed by Meigs and Sherman, has some offset toning from a seal ribbon and a split to the last page, else very good. With two related letters concerning mail carried on the line and accounting corrections.
