Description:

(1820-1891) Union major general declared by the press to be "insane", he led his army in their March to the Sea, taking Atlanta, Savannah and Columbia along the way. Important content A.L.S., 1p 4to., Washington, Jan. 30, 1868 to a "Daniel Drodin[?] & Co.", possibly a publisher and in the same city. Sherman angrily defends his position concerning the actions of ex-Union general Thomas Francis Meagher, acting governor of the Territory of Montana, all but calling Meagher a coward. In part: "...The dispatches you sent are true copies but are only a part – Indians did not enter Gallatin Valley. Meagher either was scared, or misrepresented the case, so that Maj. Lewis[?] did not muster in the troops for the U.S. The whole expenses was never [authorized] by the U.S. and should never be paid. The Territory of Montana should pay them if paid at all..." Folds, very good. In early 1867, Montana pioneer John Bozeman was believed killed by a band of Blackfeet, who attacked other settlers as well. Meagher responded by organizing the Montana Territory Volunteer Militia to retaliate, and believed that an incursion would be made into the Gallatin Valley. Although he secured funding from the federal government to campaign against the Indians, no attack was made in the valley and Meagher was roundly criticized for his actions. He drowned in July, 1867 and could not defend his case.
