Description:

WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS PREPARES FOR PILOT KNOB
[WILLIAM S. ROSECRANS] (1819-1898) Union major general who headed the Army of the Cumberland to gain a hard-won victory at Murfreesboro, only to be routed by Longstreet at Chickamauga. A partly-printed, important content war-date telegram from Rosecrans, Sept. 24, 1864, in pencil and secretarially signed. Directed to Capt. Pennock, in reads, in part: ‘…Thanks for sending gunboat to Girardeau. [Thomas] Shelby is coming up between Pilot Knob & Girardeau. His advance occupies Farmington it is reported. [Sterling] Price is to follow…'. On Saturday, September 24, 1864, Nathan Bedford Forrest's troops, who had just enjoyed a victory over a much larger force of Union troops in the town of Athens in Limestone County, advanced north with the intent of destroying the trestle. The battle of Pilot Knob, three days after this telegram on September 27, 1864, pitted Confederate forces under Sterling Price at Fort Davidson in Pilot Knob, Missouri, in the hopes of challenging Union control of that state. On September 24, Price learned that Union troops held Pilot Knob. Two days later, he sent part of his command north to disrupt and then moved towards Pilot Knob with the rest of his army. The Confederates paid dearly for this attack, losing some 1,000 men and giving the Union army more time to prepare to defend St. Louis and Jefferson City. Worthy of further research. Fine.
