Description:

WILLIAM RANDOLPH HEARST
(1863 - 1951) American newspaper publisher who built circulation using sensational reporting and helped give rise to the era of "yellow journalism". Superb, fine association oversize I.S.P. 10" x 13" (sight), a smiling head and shoulders portrait by James Manatt of Hollywood, humorously inscribed to aviation pioneer Merrill C. Meigs: "Dear Babe - for the very pleasant evening chez Paris. That is one Paris I have not been put out of - yet. Best wishes from W. R. Hearst". Merrill Church "Babe" Meigs (1886-1968) was the publisher of the Chicago Herald and Examiner, and later responsible for the expansion of the Chicago airport into a world-class aviation center. A friend of luminaries of his time, including Henry Ford, Charles Lindbergh and Hearst, of course, he later served as President of the Hearst Corporation. From a direct descendent of Meigs, matted and framed in wood. Mat bears light staining at bottom, photo very good.
