Description:

(1694-1769) Colonial governor of Connecticut and delegate to the Albany Congress. Manuscript L.S. 'Wm. Pitkin', 1p. legal folio., Hartford, March 10, 1767, to DANIEL LYMAN (1756-1830), New England soldier, Chief Justice of the Rhode Island Supreme Court and member of the secessionist Hartford Convention, regarding an issue with a recent act of Parliament. In full: '...Your letter of the 2d instant I received, the difficulty you mention was unexpected. I fully concluded that the Allowance for Subsistence was very clearly stated and settled in and by the act of Parliament and have no information to alter my opinion with regard to it. I have wrote to General Gage on the affair, hope an answer soon and until these be returned from him [I am] not to give any special orders: your own prudence with the advice you may have I hope will direct you to conduct as not to injure yourselves or disadvantage the Government...' Tear at the right margin has been mostly repaired by tape on the verso, and slight foxing, heavy folds. The act of Parliament that is likely being referred to is the Revenue Act of 1767, an act that added taxes on special imports to the colonies such as glass, lead, paper, and tea. This was one of the many repressive acts put on the colonies by Parliament in the years of building tension before the Revolutionary War.
