Description:

WILLIAM PENN
(1644 - 1718) English Quaker, religious reformer and colonist, a framer of the Pennsylvania Charter of 1677 who received the grant of Pennsylvania from Charles II in 1681. Fine content manuscript D.S. "WmPenn" as Proprietor of Pennsylvania, 1p. folio on parchment, [n.p.] July 27, 1681. A very early grant of land in Pennsylvania, accomplished only months after Penn received his official grant of lands in the New World by Charter from King Charles II, allowing him to launch what he called his "holy experiment," a colony "governed in accordance with the highest Christian ethic". In this document, the largest form of grant used by Penn to sell or lease land, "William Penn of Worminghast" certifies that he has granted to Christopher Howard of Somerset 500 acres within his proprietorship, "bounded on the East by Delaware River"; said tract of land Penn has developed into "a Province...by the name of Pennsylvania in order to the Establishing of a Colony and Plantations in the same...". Howard is assessed an annual quitrent for the tract. Minor splits at fold intersections, a few very minor holes and light toning, else very good condition. A superb example.
