WILLIAM P. CARLIN
(1829-1903) Indian Fighter and Union brigadier general who defeated Jeff Thompson at Fredericktown and led a corps at Chickamauga and Atlanta. A.L.S., 1p. 4to., ‘Fort Omaha', Aug. 16, 1885, to a Professor Nasen of a ‘Polytechnic Institute'. In part: ‘Will you be so kind as to send me a catalogue or other prospectus of the terms… on which boys or young men can enter your school. I think of sending my son to it at once… He is now nineteen years of age…' Carlin signs at the conclusion in black ink. The letter shows folds and is inlaid on a slightly larger backing page, along with a later print of a photographs showing Carlin and his staff circa the Battle of Stones River. In very good condition overall. Carlin's son, William E. Carlin, would later gain some notoriety as the leader of a hunting party which became lost on the Lochsa River in Idaho in the fall of 1893, before being rescued by an Army search party dispatched by his father. The incident was widely covered in the contemporary press.
