Description:

WILLIAM N. STARKE
(1835 - 1878) Confederate staff officer in the Adjutant General's Department, serving on the staffs of Gens. Braxton Bragg, William E. Starke (his father who was killed at Antietam), Winder and lastly A. P. Hill. He was promoted major on February 19, 1864 and ended the war at Appomattox. War-date A.L.S. written and signed on behalf of his father Gen. WILLIAM E. STARKE and signed with his own name at conclusion, 2pp. 4to., 'Camp near Greenbriar Bridge', Nov. 28, 1861 to Col. J. Lucius Davis in Wise's Legion. Starke advises that he has several wagon teams of his own available for transportation, as well as its own victuals, all apparently in response to Davis' demands for what he believes to be property belonging to his own command. Text is a bit light but legible, very good.
