Description:

WILLIAM MOULTRIE
(1730 - 1805) American Revolution major general who repulsed the British attack on Sullivan''s Island, defended Charleston, and was captured and imprisoned by the British until 1782. CHEROKEES ARE MURDERED, ENRAGING WASHINGTON Important content L.S. "Willm: Moultrie", 1p. 8vo., Charleston, Jan. 8, 1793 to President George Washington. In full: "Agreeable to a resolve of the legislature of this state, I have the honor herewith to transmit to you, a copy of an oath made by Benjamin Cleveland respecting the murder of some Cherokee Indians..." One tiny marginal chip, else fine. On Feb. 10, 1793 President Washington forcefully responded to this letter: "...I cannot on this occasion forebear expressing the extreme regret with which I learn that so cruel and unprovoked a murder has been committed by white people. In vain we may expect peace with the Indians on our frontiers, so long as a lawless set of unprincipled wretches can violate the rights of solemn treaties...". Benjamin Cleveland was himself an old Indian fighter who had earlier participated in the destruction of 36 Cherokee settlements, and had supplied a deposition on the murders Washington so abhorred.
