(1843-1901) Twenty-fifth President of the United States, acquired Cuba, Puerto Rico, Guam and Hawaii. Assassinated. MCKINLEY APPOINTS SCHLEY REAR ADMIRAL FOLLOWING THE BATTLE OF SANTIAGO Important partly-printed D.S. as President, 1p. folio parchment, Washington, Aug. 10, 1898. Only five weeks after Schley's brilliant success at Santiago, McKinley rewards the hero with a multi-level promotion. In part: '...I...do advance him six numbers and appoint him a Rear Admiral in the Navy for eminent and conspicuous conduct in battle [backdated] from the 10th of August...' Co-signed by Secretary of the Navy JOHN D. LONG (1838-1915). Folds, some soiling and tiny losses at margins, else boldly signed and near fine. WINFIELD S. SCHLEY 1839-1911) was a rear admiral in the U.S. Navy and the hero of the Battle of Santiago de Cuba during the Spanish-American War. Commanding the armored cruiser U.S.S. Brooklyn during the battle, his quick thinking resulted in the complete destruction of the Spanish fleet, ensured the independence of Cuba from Spanish rule, and bringing the Spanish-American War to a quick close. An historic appointment from the height of the career of one of America's most renowned naval officers.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
