WILLIAM MACRAE
(1834-1882) Confederate brigadier general who fought with distinction at Antietam and Bristoe Station, and at Ream's Station. Signature ‘Wm MacRae' in violet ink as superintendent of the Western and Atlantic Railroad Co., on a 3.5 x 2.25 in. pass made out to an H. S. McComb, president of the Mississippi & Tennessee railroad. Shows scattered toning, otherwise in very good to fine condition. SOLD WITH: an interesting autograph manuscript (unsigned) in pencil, 2pp. 8vo., [Raleigh, n.d.], a page of MacRae's handwritten notes for a speech given to a Confederate veterans' group, in full: ‘By Aug. 1862 the State [North Carolina] had furnished to the military services of the Conf. 64,636 volunteers. By Nov 1864 – 21,608 and before the end of the war it furnished also 21,343 conscripts, 9,893 reserves 3,203 state troops, 3,117 detailed men, and 3,100 serving in regiments from other states, making a total of over 126,000. Besides this several thousand home guards were in service. This was nearly one sixth of the Confederate army. Her military population was 115,369. N. C. also furnished to the Union army 346 white and 5035 colored soldiers. Of the higher officers in the military service of the Conf. the state had two lieut. generals (T. H. Homes & D. H. Hill) seven maj. generals, and twenty six brigadier generals. Shows a pencil identifying inscription and some tape residue to the verso, with a small holes at the right edge, otherwise in very good condition. Two pieces.
