WILLIAM M. "BOSS" TWEED(1823 -1878) Mayor of New York and political boss. His construction of the New York Court House and the graft associated with it nearly bankrupted New York and led to his ultimate jailing. Scarce partly-printed D.S. "M. W. Tweed" as Deputy Street Commissioner, 1p., 4to, New York City, Jan. 29, 1869, a City of New York Requisition Form number 119 to W.C. Rogers & Company for various items of stationery amounting to $254.50. Tweed adds, in part: "...I certify to the necessity of the above expenditure and approve the above account...". By this time, Tweed had added almost $100 million to New York City's expenses without the matching costs, results, or expenditures and would be arrested only a few years later for massive corruption. File hole and slight tear at head, slight folds, else very good.
