A vertical full-length tear at the center has been repaired with archival tape, some light toning at the folds, else very good. Accompanied by a page from a book on Montgomery County, MD, which bears an excerpt from the diary of the man to whom this pass was issued, Roger B. Farquhar: ‘July 11 – Walked over to Richard J. Bowie's before breakfast, and fell in with Col. Jackson's brigade, at old mill above my meadow. Arrested and taken before Col. Jackson who gave me a pass. Went to Olney and passed through Union pickets'. Mounted to the verso of this page is a printed letter from Farquhar's granddaughter, in part: ‘If provenance ever figures in desirability or interest attached to such papers, I would add that the person for whom they served was a life-time resident of Montgomery County...Cf. also (re other family members) ‘Old Homes and History of Montg. Co., Maryland' by Roger Brooke Farquhar, a son of the man for whom the passes were issued...Roger of the passes, my grandfather, had to hide his horses in the woods to avoid their being commandeered by Union soldiers...He himself was a Union sympathizer, being also a Quaker and against slavery...'.
