Description:

(1860-1925) American lawyer and politician, Secretary of State, and the chief prosecutor who dueled with Clarence Darrow in the famous Scopes "Monkey" trial. BRYAN DISCUSSES HIS RESERVATIONS ON THE LEAGUE OF NATIONS Fine content T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Miami, Dec. 30, 1922 to D. Peirson Ricks, a teenager. Bryan discusses his thoughts about American acceptance of the League of Nations. In part: "...I believe there ought to be some form of cooperation by means of which our nation could use its moral prestige in adjusting controversies in Europe...there ought to be a reservation which would protect us against the action of any European group which tried to draw us into a war against our will. The League of Nations Covenant left out this reservation...In the hope of getting immediate ratification, I favored accepting the Covenant as it was...When I found out we could not get in without reservations, I favored any reservation that would enable us to enter the League. But I have always had in mind the changing of the Covenant so as to reserve to our nation the right of independence of action. I had that reservation in all my treaties..." Fine condition, double matted with a portrait and set into a silvered wood frame.
