(1883-1959) "Wild Bill", American brigadier general chosen by Roosevelt to head the O.S.S. (precursor to the C.I.A.) Donovan planted over 16,000 people behind enemy lines and developed elaborate plans to subvert Axis military operations. War-date T.L.S. as U.S. Coordinator of Information, 1p. 4to., Washington, D.C., Jan. 5, 1942, to Morris C. Troper, chairman of the European Executive Council of the American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee. Donovan acknowledges the receipt of Troper's letter regarding a Charles M. Levy, and promises to look into the matter. He signs at the conclusion in blue ink. Shows original mailing folds, with a line of adhesive residue to the bottom edge, else very good. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee worked to facilitate the emigration of hundreds of thousands of Jews fleeing persecution under the Nazis. During the war, it worked in a clandestine capacity to provide information regarding the Holocaust to Allied leaders, and postwar organized aid for its survivors.
