Description:

(WILLIAM HULL)
(1753 - 1825) American soldier and politician. fought in the American Revolution, was Governor of Michigan Territory, and was a general in the War of 1812, for which he is best remembered for surrendering Fort Detroit to the British. Manuscript D.S. 2pp. legal folio, Newton, [Mass.], Apr. 11, 1805 being a period copy of General William Hull's farewell address to the 3rd Massachusetts militia upon receiving his appointment from Jefferson to serve as Governor of the Michigan Territory. The document, headed "Division Orders" reads, in small part: "...the major General availed himself of this opportunity to announce his intentions to resign the command of the Division and to express to his Brother officers and soldiers before his connection with them is dissolved the Great Satisfaction he has received from their past conduct and the deep interest he feels in their future honour; to the last period of his life they will be held in grateful remembrance by him... From a permeation of the great importance of a well regulated militia to the safety of their Country and the preservation of a happy system of Government he has devoted a large portion of his life and best talents to its organization and discipline... That his successors may be encouraged by the same respectful treatment; that each officer and soldier may long continue in the paths of military glory..." More good content. Hull assumed his new post at Fort Detroit. He would famously surrender the post to the British in 1812. Usual folds, light toning, else very good condition.
