WILLIAM HOWE
(1729 - 1814) British general who succeeded Gen. Thomas Gage as Commander-in-Chief of the British forces in North America, commanded forces at Bunker Hill, in New York and around Philadelphia, resigned in protest against British lack of support. Rare partly-printed D.S. "W Howe" 1p. oblong legal folio, Philadelphia, Nov 20, 1777, being an appointment of George Stainforth "... to be CAPTAIN of a Company... [Second Ba]ttalion of New Jersey Volunteers Commanded by Lieut. Colonel Commandant John Morris" The Second Battalion was organized in Monmouth County, New Jersey in late June 1776. In July 1777, the 2nd battalion accompanied the large flotilla that sailed from New York to Delaware Bay, saw action at Brandywine and Germantown. Primarily an artillery battalion, the 2nd would see action one more time at Monmouth in the summer of 1778. For the remainder of the conflict they were assigned to various posts around British-occupied Manhattan. Loss at upper right replaced with period paper, weak folds repaired with tape on verso, light soiling, else good to very good.
