Description:

(1857 - 1930) Twenty-seventh President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice. Great association D.S. on parchment as President, 1p. folio, Washington, March 12, 1910, a naval appointment of Byron McCandless to the rank of Lieutenant. Signed 'Wm. H. Taft at the conclusion. Also signed by his Secretary of the Navy GEORGE VON L. MEYER. Two patriotic vignettes grace the top and bottom of the document, and an original blue paper seal is present yet chipped at bottom. Condition lacking, with numerous creases and folds, brown stains at upper-right corner, spots of loss at the edges. Estimated accordingly. BYRON MCCANDLESS (1881 - 1967) was a longtime U.S. Navy officer who was awarded the Navy Cross during World War I and the Legion of Merit during World War II. He was also prominent in the field of vexillology (the study of flags), and helped design two separate versions of the Flag of the President of the United States - once in 1915 by the order of Woodrow Wilson, then again in 1945 by Franklin D. Roosevelt. His latter design is still the current design for the presidential seal and flag, as the only changes since have been to add more stars after Alaska and Hawaii became states.
