Description:

(1742 - 1790) American Revolutionary leader, a signer of the Declaration of Independence and a member of the Continental Congress (1774-77). HOOPER PROSECUTES A MAN WHO ROBBED A SLAVE Especially rare A.D.S. "Will Hooper Atty. pr. Dom. Reg.", 1p. 4to., Salisbury, N.C., Mar. 5, 1768, an intriguing verdict in a case of petty larceny. In part: "...The Jurors for Our Sovereign Lord the King upon their Oath Present that John Tate late of the County of Rowan, Labourer...at the...one negro Man Slave of the value of six pence Sterling money of Great Britain of the goods and Chattels of one Robert Tate there and then being found with force of arms feloniously did steal and carry away against the peace of our said Lord the King, his Crown and Dignity..." Boldly signed as prosecutor at conclusion. Silked recto and verso for preservation, due to some loss to a few words at a horizontal fold. Trimmed slightly at bottom. Despite the loss, it is clear that John Tate robbed the "negro Man Slave" of the sum mentioned, which belonged to Robert Tate, very likely a relative. Estimated accordingly. Ex: Kenneth Rendell, ca. 1960-67.
