Description:

WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
(1773 - 1841) Ninth President of the United States, military hero at Tippecanoe Creek and against Tecumseh, died after one month in office. Good content manuscript D.S. as aide to Gen. Anthony Wayne, 1p. 6.25 x 7.75 in., Greenville, Aug. 25, 1795, a 'Provision return for one interpreter & one released prisoner for four days at One & half ration / day ending twenty eighth Day of August 1795 incl...' Signed by Harrison at bottom adding rank: 'aid de camp'. Mounted to heavy stock, a marginal damp stain affecting four words of text, else very good. Almost exactly a year earlier, while serving as aide-de-camp to Anthony Wayne, Harrison had participated in Wayne's decisive victory at the Battle of Fallen Timbers on August 20, 1794, which ended the Northwest Indian War. A few weeks before signing this return, Harrison was a signatory of the Treaty of Greenville which ended the conflict. The 'prisoner' mentioned in this return was no doubt an Indian being returned to his tribe, with the assistance of an interpreter.
