WILLIAM HENRY HARRISON
(1773 - 1841) Ninth President of the United States, military hero at Tippecanoe Creek and against Tecumseh, died after one month in office. Rare war-date manuscript L.S. "Willm Henry Harrison" 1p. 8vo., "Head Quarters, Fort Union", Nov. 3, 1812. The newly-commissioned brigadier general in the U.S. Army who had just assumed command of the Second Army of the Northwest sends a fiery missive to Capt. William Piatt, Deputy Quartermaster General in Mansfield. In part: "...I forgot today to inform you that I had promised to send some shoes to the Troops, lately commanded by Genl. Beall - be pleased to write to the quarter master in one of the waggons...also direct him to furnish Genl Croosks with shoes & Blankets. I have ordered Genl. Croos to send on immediately to Delaware all the Dragoons which are with him, by way of Mount Vernon & Fredericktown, it will be necessary that funds should be furnished the officer who commands them or forage be procured for them...please to do one or the other...I am informed also that some of the Dragoons want swords pistols Blankets by the General does not say how many of each article - you will take our thirty swords & twenty pairs of pistols for them. These I intended to be left at Fredericktown but upon further reflection I think the Dragoons had better come by Mansfield...the Waggons which are to go with the cavalry arms to Franklinton must not be delayed...". In the last three months of 1812, Harrison made preparations for a winter campaign in the Northwest. Within a few days after the surrender of Hull at Detroit in mid-August, the frontier line was fairly protected. Very good condition.
