Description:

(1822 – 1872) Indiana lawyer and a controversial Union brigadier general. At Antietam, Harrow's regiment attacked enemy positions along the Sunken Road, where half his men became casualties. He led his brigade through the Fredericksburg Campaign, and at Gettysburg his men helped repel a part of Pickett's Charge. With the wounding of John Gibbon, Harrow took command of the 2nd Division, which suffered over 1,600 casualties out of 3,773 men. Eventually his reputation for drinking and his stubbornness would cost him his command - only after more success at Atlanta and Ezra Church. Very rare, fine content A.L.S., 1p. 4to., [n.p., n.d., likely before Atlanta, 1864], to 'Col. J. M. Oliver'. In part: '...After a brief skirmish, the Enemy (graybacks) were completely routed - I clothed myself, not in 'purple and fine linen', but in blue with a white collar & hat...when order rec'd direct[ing] me to hold my command in readiness for important movements...We will move this evening - this must defer the anticipated visit Genl. H...' Very good to fine. Harrow was killed in a train derailment in 1872.
