Description:

(1824-1865) United States Army officer who resigned after 16 years of service in the Army Corps of Engineers to serve in the Confederate States Army during the American Civil War. He was wounded at the Second Battle of Fort Fisher by a musket ball to his leg and died in a Union prison camp of dysentery. Good content and association A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Wilmington, March 26, 1864, to fellow Confederate general Braxton Bragg. In part: "I wish to ask you whether any definite or authentic information has been received relative to a rumored campaign of Burnside in this state, and also for your opinion in the matter. I think, myself, that an expedition is preparing or prepared and on its way to operate in this state either in cooperation with movement on Richmond from Northern Virginia, or upon this place... Whatever may be the design of the enemy, it is probable form information received of reinforcing at Washington, and upon hints gathered in the Northern papers, from letters received through the blockade, that a strong expedition is projected if not already organized. Should this prove true, would it not be well to provide for the movement of some additional force in the state? Could not a brigade, for example, be spared from the Dept. of Geo[rgia] and S[outh] C[arolina] since the failure of Gillmore?... My chief apprehension here is from surprises, the enemy being able to move with so much secrecy by water and with so much more speed than we can place troops to meet them unless the troops are already on hand..." He signs at the conclusion in black ink, adding his rank "Maj Genl". Shows original mailing folds, else very good.
