(1857 - 1930) Twenty-seventh President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice. A.L.S. 2pp. 8vo., Cincinnati, Aug. 31, 1884, on United States Circuit Court of Appeals letterhead to "Leonard", regarding his life insurance premium and having to "kite" his funds. In part: "...I enclose a check for my life insurance premium together with the statement of the account. I wish you to take it to the agent...on the 8th. By that time, I expect to be able to deposit my salary check for August....if it is delayed I shall overdraw my account....tell the cashier the circumstances and that the check will come in a day or two, and that I would like to overdraw my account for the insurance premium...". With the original transmittal envelope, as well as the receipt for the $106.00 paid by Taft to the Mutual Benefit Life Insurance Company. Mailing folds, very good condition.
