Description:

WILLIAM H. T. WALKER
(1816 - 1864) Confederate major general who commanded a brigade at Pensacola. Walker, a much-admired leader, killed in action before Atlanta. Rare war-date A.E.S. penned on the verso of an A.L.S. of Capt. A. A. PRATT, 9th Regt. 3rd. Brig., Ga. State Troops, Camp Jackson, Feb. 1, 1862, directed to Lt. Col. Charlton H. Way[?]. Pratt requests a ten-day leave for Sgt. R. L. Smythe to attend estate business concerning his family. At the bottom, commanding Col. ROBERT HARRIS of the regiment writes an A.E.S. approving the leave. On verso, Walker pens an A.E.S.: '...I would recommend the leave for five days. Ten days should not be given in these times. Of this you are the best judge...' Signed with rank as brigadier general. At the bottom, Major LAMAR COBB, who served as an aide to Gen. Howell Cobb, approves a five-day leave on behalf of Gen. Henry R. Jackson. Some wear and soiling along folds, else very good.
