WILLIAM H. SEWARD
(1801-1872) American politician and Lincoln's Secretary of State, responsible for preventing official European recognition of the Confederacy. Early fine association and content A.L.S., 2pp. 4to., Philadelphia, Sep. 20, 1837, to NICHOLAS BIDDLE (1786-1844) American financier and president of the Bank of the United States where he followed a policy of a stable money supply with restricted credit. Seward discusses the possibility of the proposed Bank of the United States agency in London selling American securities. In part: '...I propose that the Bank of the United States receive from me the certificates of deposit of the American Life Insurance and Trust Company for for the aggregate sum of Six Hundred and fifty thousand dollars, payable at the expiration of twenty years and bearing an interest of five percent...' He requests the bank provide him an advance of $60,000 upon receipt of the certificates, and sets forth instructions for its payment. More details follow. A very narrow marginal binding strip and two trivial marginal tape repairs, otherwise very good. Seward would be elected governor of New York a few months later.
