WILLIAM H. MCGUFFEY (2)
(1800 – 1873) American college professor and president who is best known for writing the McGuffey Readers, the first widely used series of elementary school-level textbooks. More than 120 million copies of McGuffey Readers were sold between 1836 and 1960, placing its sales in a category with the Bible and Webster's Dictionary. Partly-printed D.S., 1p. 8vo., the University of Virginia, June 29, 1859, a certificate for excellence in the study of 'Moral Philosophy' awarded to J. Laurence Meem. Boldly signed at bottom. Some marginal soiling. SOLD WITH: University of Virginia Certificate of Proficiency in 'Political Economy', also issued to Meem, 1p. sm. folio parchment, 1859, also signed by McGuffey, the text a bit light. Two pieces. James Lawrence Meem would be mustered into Co. 'G' , 11th Virginia Infantry on April 23, 1861 and killed on May 31, 1862 at Seven Pines.
