Description:

WILLIAM H. TAFT
(1857 - 1930) Twenty-seventh President of the United States and Supreme Court Chief Justice. Good content T.L.S. as Secretary of War on official letterhead, 2pp. 4to., Washington, Feb. 6, 1905 to the chairman of a committee planning a commemorative military and naval exposition at Jamestown, Virginia. Taft returns the bill which seeks an appropriation: "...provide[s] for celebrating the birth of the American nation...by the holding of an international naval, marine and military exposition in the vicinity of Jamestown..." with the Army Chief of Staff's response, which cites Army Regulations and further states no provision has been made for troop transportation, nor for Army officers' "entertainment of foreign naval and military officers...Perhaps $25,000 would be a reasonable estimate..." All in all, Taft calls for the sum of $40,000 for the gala event. Very good.
