WILLIAM GATES
(1788-1868) Union Brigadier General who led the 3rd U.S. Artillery, participating in all United States conflicts from 1812 onward, including the Civil War, where he was mustered in at the age of 73. Fine association, Mexican War-date A.L.S. ‘Wm Gates Col 3rd Artr' 1p. 4to., Tampico, Mexico, Dec. 10, 1846, to Capt. John. G. Barnard, head of construction of American defenses in the port of Tampico and future Civil War general. In part: ‘…In assuming your line for the purpose of erecting the Military Works or fortification on the Western side of the town, you will be obliged to destroy such huts or habitations that stand in your way. You will therefore have each and every hut fairly valued and pay the owner thereof accordingly….warn him or her to move immediately…'. Barnard (1815-1882) served in the Mexican War, and went on to become a Brevetted Brigadier General and Chief Engineer of the Army of the Potomac. He was present at First Bull Run, and, as Chief Engineer, participated in the Peninsula Campaign, Yorktown, Chickahominy, Gaines Mill and Malvern Hill. Light foxing and soiling, overall very good.
