Description:

(1727 - 1820) Signer of the Declaration of Independence. Ellery was a prominent Rhode Island lawyer who represented the state in the Continental Congress and in the proceedings leading the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Good association A.L.S. as Collector of Customs, 1p. 8vo., Oct. 20, 1794 to BENJAMIN LINCOLN (1733-1810), American Revolution major general, commanding an army in the south, was captured at Charleston and later exchanged, Secretary of War and now Collector of Customs at Boston and Charleston. Ellery makes a professional inquiry of his old colleague, in part: '...I have received of Mr. Hayes 12 casks of oil. I am told it is customary...to weigh Iron on importation. As it is an ad valorum article it has not been the usage here to weigh it...I find that the exchange on Rubles is higher this than the last year. I wish to know at what rate you estimated them on the last importation from Russia. This is to be handed to you by my Son who is my Depy. Collector...' Some offsetting from the seal affects two or three words in the text, else very good.
