WILLIAM E. BOEING
(1881 - 1956) Aviation pioneer who founded the Boeing Company and multiplied the size of the firm through military contracts and commercial orders. In 1934, the United States government accused him of monopolistic practices. He was ordered to break up his company into three separate entities: United Aircraft Company, Boeing Airplane Company, and United Air Lines. Rare T.L.S. on his personal letterhead, 1p. 4to., Seattle, Oct. 29, 1919 to the Secretary of the Aerial League of America. Boeing acknowledges an invitation to serve on a committee to organize the 'First Aerial derby Around the World', noting: '…I regret exceedingly that, owing to continued contemplated absence from the City, I will not be able to act on this Committee…'. Fine. Auction records show no sale of any letter by Boeing in the past 25 years. Also included is a printed itinerary for the commission on its rail trip from New York to Seattle (and thence by sea around the world), and it bears a Chinese 'Received by Aeroplane' stamp at top dated Dec. 24, 1919. Two pieces.
