Description:

(1827 - 1864) Confederate brigadier general. As Colonel of the 14th Mississippi Infantry, he fought and was later captured at the Battle of Fort Donelson. Winning distinction at the Battle of Coffeeville, Baldwin would later participate in the battles of Port Gibson and Champion's Hill, as well as taking part in the Vicksburg Campaign. Captured once again, Baldwin was able to secure his release and assigned to the District of Mobile where he was killed in an accident when a broken stirrup caused him to fall off his horse. Very rare A.L.S. 'W. E. Baldwin', 1p. 4to., Columbus, Miss., Oct. 17, 1852 to a Mr. Keeler. In part: '...the agent at Montgomery...says the Frank[?] No. 8 has not reached that place - you had better make some inquiries. Nothing new business dull...in consequence of the dry dusty weather...rain...will enable the ladies to come out...Am glad to learn that you have Regalia with you as it is wanted for the upcoming celebration...' Some white spotting and folds, a pencil note at bottom easily removed, still very good. Baldwin was a book seller before the war (versus lawyer, businessman or politician), thus his signature is very rare.

Shipments are sent via FedEx and DHL (for most overseas shipments) or FedEx Ground at the auctioneer's option. Due to complications from the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we will ship with USPS Priority Mail only if the buyer submits their request to us in writing and accepts responsibility for delayed shipments. Signature is always required, unless other arrangements are made. Handling and shipping charges will be added to the invoice in one entry. Buyers should be aware that large, framed, fragile or odd shaped items can incur substantial shipping and packing charges. International shipments are invoiced by DIMENSIONAL weight, not the item weight. Please contact us for an estimate before bidding NOTE: Large, heavy or bulky items may not be shipped by the auctioneer - arrangements for shipping of these items via a third-party shipper may be arranged through the auction house. Customers who supply their own courier account number will still be charged a handling fee.
